Welcome to TORPEDOES!
EIT Manufacturing South East and Motor Oil Hellas launch the TORPEDOES Datathon, a collaborative initiative developed under the concept of Teaching Factories, with a focus on Predictive Maintenance in wind farms. This initiative is a partnership with the UNDERPIN project, coordinated by Motor Oil, and the Flex4Res project, coordinated by the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation. It is designed to offer students from the University of Patras hands-on experience in Artificial Intelligence and Data Spaces, while addressing a real-world challenge.
The challenge is owned by Motor Oil Renewable Energy (MORE), a subsidiary of Motor Oil Hellas and one of the largest operators of renewable energy systems in Greece. MORE manages a portfolio of 839 MW of installed capacity, 94% of which consists of wind-based power generation units. In addition, the company oversees a development pipeline of 2.2 GW across various stages of implementation. Predictive maintenance plays a crucial role in the operational efficiency of wind farms. Due to the remote locations, harsh environmental conditions, and large number of turbines involved, maintenance can be complex and costly. Furthermore, wind turbines experience natural periods of inactivity due to fluctuating wind conditions. By aligning maintenance operations with these periods through predictive insights, operators can significantly reduce overall downtime, increase reliability, and support a more stable integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
The TORPEDOES Datathon challenges participants to analyze a real-world dataset and develop predictive maintenance models capable of identifying anomalies and forecasting turbine failures before they occur. Participants will receive one year of operational data from a Greek wind farms, uncover trends and failure patterns, and propose innovative, data-driven solutions that reflect industrial needs.
Through TORPEDOES Datathon, we aim to bridge theoretical learning with industrial application, promote AI-driven innovation, and empower future engineers with practical skills aligned with Europe’s digital and sustainable transition. Participation is open exclusively to students and researchers from the University of Patras. The top-performing teams will be awarded with recognition, visibility, and a dedicated visit to a MORE wind farm, offering them a rare opportunity to observe and understand real-time industrial operations in the renewable energy sector.

Scaling Slovak Innovation Call supports activities undertaking innovative small-scale manufacturing solutions from the demonstration stage (TRL7) through to market uptake (TRL 8-9). The grant is awarded to activities and/or individuals in Slovakia that aim to scale up into European and global markets.
EIT Manufacturing East GmbH launches the “Research Mobility” call, aimed at supporting master and doctoral students from Slovakia who wish to enhance their academic and professional skills through international research opportunities. This initiative seeks to foster collaboration and innovation by enabling Slovak students to undertake research mobilities at universities and research institutes across Europe.
Selected applicants will be given the opportunity to conduct research projects in their field of expertise at renowned institutions, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and gaining valuable experience in a global academic environment. Applicants will compete for funding that supports their travel, living costs, and research activities during the mobility period.
The selected applicants will receive grant to help them maximise the impact of their mobility, while also facilitating their integration into European research networks.
This call is made possible through the collaboration of the Ministry of Investment, Regional Development, and Informatization of the Slovak Republic and EIT Manufacturing under the joint programme known as the EIT Manufacturing – Slovakia – X Fund. This initiative focuses on supporting research mobility activities designed to enhance digital transformation processes in Slovakia, in alignment with the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization of the Slovak Republic 2021 – 2027.
